Anambra Government Intensifies Lassa Fever Response Efforts

The Anambra State Government has ramped up surveillance and contact tracing efforts following the confirmation of a Lassa fever case in the Omasi community, located in Ayamelum Local Government Area. Dr Afam Obidike, the Commissioner for Health, announced these measures during an emergency stakeholders’ meeting in Awka.
The patient is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The state has activated its Incident Management System and is collaborating with health partners, including the World Health Organisation and Médecins Sans Frontières, to coordinate containment efforts.
Health officials will visit the affected household to identify individuals who had contact with the patient and assess their exposure. Dr Chuma Emembolu, the State Epidemiologist, advised residents to observe preventive measures such as proper food storage and maintaining environmental hygiene.
He urged the community to avoid self-medication and seek medical attention for persistent fever or malaria-like symptoms. The government aims to identify potential exposures early and ensure timely medical attention for affected residents.
