Anambra Court Sentences Choirmaster to 25 Years for Rape

On July 17, 2023, Justice Chudi Nwankwo of the Anambra State High Court sentenced James Onuorah, a choirmaster at Iba Pope Parish in Awada, to 25 years in prison for raping a 16-year-old girl and seven years for offensive conduct. The court found Onuorah guilty on two of three counts brought against him, which included charges of rape and indecent assault.

The prosecution, led by M.C. Ikeabunz and Nkiru Nzekwu, presented evidence that Onuorah exploited his position as a spiritual authority to lure the victim, claiming to perform deliverance.

The victim testified that Onuorah had sexual intercourse with her, resulting in pregnancy. The court ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, with corroborating evidence including the victim's pregnancy.

Onuorah was acquitted of a third count related to the victim's elder sister due to insufficient evidence. The court awarded the victim N5 million in compensation.
