Abia State Jails Two Sexual Offenders, Launches Register

The Abia State Government has successfully prosecuted two sexual offenders, with one, a 35-year-old named Ngozi Bless Felix, sentenced to 30 years in prison for allegedly raping a teenager. The second offender received a 10-year sentence for defiling a five-year-old child.

These sentences were handed down by a family court sitting at the Umuahia High Court. The state government, represented by Okei Kanu, announced this outcome during a press briefing following an executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.

The Abia State Commission has also opened a sexual offenders register, which will publicly name and shame convicted sexual offenders as a deterrent against future crimes. This initiative aims to address issues of sexual assault, gender-based violence, and domestic violence in the state.

The commission noted that victims of sexual assault are receiving treatment at a referral center in Aba.
