Anambra Men Sentenced to Death for Rape and Murder

On Wednesday, a High Court in Anambra State, presided over by Justice U. Ndigwe, sentenced Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 17-year-old Jennifer Anen.

The court found the defendants guilty on three counts: conspiracy, rape, and murder, after the prosecution proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. The case stemmed from an incident on November 25, 2020, when Jennifer, who had mental challenges, was reported missing by her grandfather.

She was later found unconscious and taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed signs of aggravated sexual assault.

The prosecution, represented by Florence Abadom Igweik, presented evidence including witness testimonies and a postmortem report. Despite the defense's denial of the allegations, the court upheld the verdict, emphasizing the need for justice for victims and the protection of societal values.
