Anambra Governor Soludo Declares Environmental Emergency

On the occasion of Anambra's 35th anniversary, Governor Charles Soludo declared a state of emergency on the environment in a statewide broadcast from Awka. He introduced a renewed Clean and Green Initiative aimed at enhancing environmental protection through community involvement and individual responsibility.

Soludo highlighted that over 30% of Anambra's landmass is affected by erosion, exacerbated by human activities such as blocked drainage, construction on waterways, and deforestation. He noted that the financial burden of remediation exceeds the state's capacity, stating that even the entire state budget would be insufficient for ecological interventions.

The governor emphasized the need for a shift from a government-led response to a grassroots approach, urging residents to engage in tree planting and report environmental violations. The declaration underscores the broader environmental challenges Nigeria faces, including flooding and inadequate drainage infrastructure.

Dr. Nonye Soludo, the governor's wife, also spoke on the state's resilience during the anniversary.
