Umeh Urges Emergency Erosion Control in Anambra State

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has called for urgent emergency measures to address the escalating erosion crisis in Idemili North and Idemili South Local Government Areas of Anambra State. Following an inspection of a significant gully erosion site in Ugama, Obosi, Umeh noted that recent heavy rainfall has led to severe land degradation, jeopardizing homes, schools, and infrastructure.

He urged the Federal Government to declare the areas an erosion disaster zone, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to prevent further destruction. Umeh plans to write to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Environment for emergency assistance and intends to sponsor a motion in the Senate for federal support.

Engineer Eric Anyamene, a local candidate, has invested ₦40 million in emergency palliative works due to the crisis, which he attributes to stormwater from neighboring communities. The supervising engineer, Mezie Andrew, stated that temporary solutions would take 2-3 weeks, but only a comprehensive government project could provide a lasting resolution.
