Victor Umeh Calls for Disaster Zone Declaration in Anambra

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has appealed to the federal government to declare the area an ecological disaster zone due to severe erosion and flooding. Recent torrential rains have caused significant devastation in Awka, leading to the drowning of a six-year-old boy and the collapse of three houses into erosion gullies, displacing residents.

During a visit to the affected areas, Umeh expressed his sorrow over the situation, stating that all local governments in his district are facing similar challenges. He emphasized the urgent need for federal intervention, as local remedial efforts are insufficient.

Umeh plans to update a pending motion regarding the Idemili North and South axis to include the current erosion crisis. He visited the family of the drowned child, AIG Celestine Okoye, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, who called for assistance, highlighting the fear residents now live in due to the ongoing threats from erosion and flooding.
