Anambra State Launches Environmental Sanitation Crackdown

The Anambra State Government, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has announced a statewide environmental sanitation crackdown set to commence on July 4, 2026. This initiative aims to address serious environmental degradation caused by individuals blocking waterways and dumping refuse in drainage channels.

The government has declared environmental sustainability a top priority, particularly in light of flooding challenges affecting the state. The crackdown will involve desilting and waste evacuation exercises, with participation from market transport unions, youth groups, community leaders, churches, and residents.

Movement restrictions will be enforced during the exercise, although essential services such as security agencies, healthcare workers, journalists, and fire service personnel will be exempt. The government has warned that failure to comply with directives will result in prosecution under the law.

Additionally, the construction of new buildings will require proper management of runoff water through catch pits.
