Anambra Native Doctor Sentenced to Two Years for Crimes

Mr. Chidozi Nwangwu, a native doctor from Anambra State, was sentenced to two years in prison by Justice Jude Obiorah on Friday.

Nwangwu faced multiple charges, including aiding and abetting kidnapping and conducting money rituals. He was arrested in February 2025 during a security operation by the Anambra State Government.

Nwangwu pleaded guilty to the charges against him and entered a plea bargain, leading to the two-year sentence based on counts three to eight of the charges. Counts two and three were struck out due to a lack of evidence.

Justice Obiorah emphasized that anyone claiming to possess healing powers through magic is liable under Anambra's criminal code. Nwangwu showed remorse, which influenced the court's decision to waive a total fine of N60 million.

He has already spent 13 months in detention, so he will serve an additional 11 months of his sentence at Awka Correctional Centre.
