NUJ Anambra Condemns Killing of Scribe's Son

The Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed outrage over the killing of Noel Chinedu Okechukwu, the only son of the council's scribe, Rex Peter Okechukwu. The incident occurred on August 17, 2024, when the 27-year-old student of Theatre Arts at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University was allegedly shot dead by a private security guard while attempting to buy fresh fish near a local pond in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The NUJ, through a communiqué signed by Chairman Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and Secretary Olechukwu Onuegbu, has called for the Nigeria Police Force to take urgent and expedited action to ensure justice for the deceased's family. The council also appealed for the withdrawal of the case file from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to allow for necessary autopsy procedures and to ensure the suspect is arraigned in a court with competent jurisdiction.

Additionally, the NUJ condemned the alleged denial of the family’s access to the deceased's body and urged the police to inform the family of its whereabouts.
