Oyo State Warns Health Workers Amid Lassa Fever Spread

The Oyo State government has issued a warning to healthcare workers to treat every patient as potentially infectious amid the spread of Lassa fever, with five confirmed cases and one death reported between January and September 8, 2025. Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the state Commissioner for Health, highlighted that Lassa fever remains endemic in certain areas of the state, with cases being detected outside the typical outbreak period.

Traditionally, Lassa fever is more prevalent from October to March, yet suspected cases are now appearing during the rainy season. Ajetunmobi attributed this ongoing risk to poor environmental hygiene and the presence of multimammate rats.

The state has recorded a total of 131 suspected cases of Lassa fever in 2026. She emphasized the need for healthcare workers to remain vigilant, use personal protective equipment, and practice proper hand hygiene.

The state has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre to enhance preparedness for potential outbreaks of Lassa fever and other infectious diseases.
