Anioma Statehood Proposal Gains Legislative Support

The Anioma State Creation Technical Committee, under the leadership of Ned Nwoko, has declared that Anioma is prepared for statehood, emphasizing its adequate infrastructure and economic capacity to function effectively as a state. In a statement made on Sunday, the committee highlighted the region's contributions to national revenue and its existing facilities, including an airport, schools, and administrative institutions.

Senator Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed strong legislative backing for the proposal, which has gained momentum with 97 senators endorsing it, marking an unprecedented level of support. The campaign for Anioma statehood is seen as a long-standing demand for fair representation and development.

The committee argues that state creation would expand job opportunities and enhance political inclusion. Despite the progress, there are warnings about the complex political environment surrounding the initiative, particularly due to national rivalries.

The Anioma bill is currently awaiting a third reading in the National Assembly, with a referendum to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
