Major Parties Gear Up for Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) are the three major political parties gearing up for the 2027 elections in Nigeria, following the official start of campaigns on August 19, 2026. The elections for governorship and assembly candidates are set for September 9, 2026.

The APC, led by incumbent President Bola Tinubu, holds a dominant position with 31 governors, 242 out of 360 House of Representatives members, and 88 out of 103 senators. In contrast, the ADC has nine senators and 29 representatives, while the NDC has four senators and 17 representatives, with neither party holding an incumbent governorship.

Despite their numerical disadvantages, the ADC and NDC are banking on the personalities of their presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to attract voters amid economic and social challenges. The political landscape is influenced by issues such as insecurity and economic hardship, with the APC maintaining a strong presence in its home zone.
