APC Petitions Police Over Ogun Governorship Candidate Row

Formal complaints have been lodged by the All Progressives Congress with Nigeria's police and secret service, demanding that Abayomi Hunye, a party member under suspension, face arrest and prosecution. Hunye claims to represent the APC as its governorship candidate for Ogun State in 2027.

Dated August 24, 2026, and bearing the signature of the party's Director of Administration, the petition charges Hunye with impersonation and behavior likely to provoke public disorder. According to the party, Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, popularly called Yayi, remains the legitimately chosen candidate.

Hunye has mounted a public challenge to these party actions, contending that selling him a ₦50 million nomination form while suspending him amounts to procedural contradiction. Speaking on television, Hunye detailed how he secured the required forms, filled out all documentation, and cleared the screening phase, positioning himself as legitimate within the primary process.

He refutes the allegation that he falsely presents himself as the official nominee, instead describing his stance as a rightful dispute over the primary's legitimacy. As tensions have escalated, Hunye has made fresh allegations that certain party figures coerced him into stepping aside for Yayi's benefit.

He describes being barred from crucial party gatherings and has sought judicial intervention regarding the nomination row. According to Hunye, he is not engaging in impersonation but rather challenging whether the primary process that elevated Yayi truly reflects party rules.

The timeline reveals the party moved to separate itself from Hunye following initial processing of his candidacy papers. By publicly rejecting Hunye and simultaneously requesting police action, the APC frames his conduct as an effort to seize candidacy through fraudulent means.
