Imo State Government to Appeal Court Ruling on Okorocha

The Imo State Government has announced its intention to appeal a Federal High Court ruling that declared Rochas Okorocha the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for the Imo West Senatorial District. The state Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, criticized the judgment as a "complete travesty of justice," stating that it would be challenged at the Court of Appeal.
Justice Egwuatu ordered Governor Hope Uzodimma to cease presenting himself as the APC candidate for the upcoming senatorial election on January 16, 2027, ruling that Uzodimma did not win the May 18 primary. The judge determined that Okorocha received the majority of votes and mandated the APC to submit his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Emelumba accused the judge of ignoring Supreme Court precedents and argued that Okorocha's suit was filed 87 days after the primary, exceeding the 14-day limit established by the Supreme Court in Orji v. Chima.
The state government intends to pursue all legal avenues to overturn the ruling.
