APM Terminals, NPA Launch Driver Safety Screening Program

APM Terminals, in collaboration with the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), has launched a drug and alcohol screening program for truck drivers operating at Apapa Port. This initiative aims to improve operational safety by ensuring that drivers of heavy-duty vehicles are fully alert while on duty.

The program involves routine breathalyzer tests to confirm driver sobriety before entering the terminal. Adebowale Lawal, the port manager, highlighted that this move is essential for maintaining safety within the port.

During a recent screening exercise, 30 drivers were tested, with three returning positive results for alcohol use, marking a reduction compared to earlier screenings. Kamal Alhraishat, the managing director of APM Terminals Apapa, noted that the company has achieved 636 days without a lost-time injury, attributing this success to extended safety protocols that include third-party drivers.

Alhraishat warned that impaired driving poses serious risks not only to the drivers but also to other road users and port staff.
