Atiku Abubakar Wins ADC Presidential Ticket for 2027

Atiku Abubakar announced his victory as the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections on Wednesday, securing 1,846,379 votes. He defeated his closest rival, former Minister of Transport Chibuike Amaechi, who garnered 540,117 votes, while economist Moham Hayatu-Deen placed third with 177,120 votes.

This victory marks Atiku's fourth attempt at the presidency, having previously contested in 2007, 2019, and 2023. His earlier attempts included running under the Action Congress in 2007 and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 and 2023, where he lost to incumbent Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his acceptance speech, Atiku described the ADC as a party built on hard work and determination to rescue Nigeria's democracy. Analysts predict a competitive race in 2027 against Bola Tinubu of the APC and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, amidst concerns about the fragmentation of opposition votes.
