INEC Announces Start of 2027 Presidential Campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that presidential and National Assembly campaigns for the 2027 general election will begin on August 19. This announcement follows the publication of the particulars and credentials of 19 presidential candidates, in compliance with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2026.

Among the candidates, President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is seeking re-election with Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is contesting under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with Rotimi Amaechi as his vice-presidential candidate.

Other candidates include Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate. The published documents detail candidates' educational qualifications, dates of birth, and occupations.

Tinubu's credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree from Chicago State University, while Atiku has a Master’s degree in International Relations from Anglia Ruskin University. The list of candidates also features representatives from various parties, including the PDP, AAC, PRP, and others.
