Kano Durbar Festival Returns with Emir Sanusi II Leading

The Kano Durbar festival has made a grand return after being suspended for a year due to security concerns and leadership disputes within the Kano Emirate. The Kano State Government confirmed that the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, will lead the Eid al-Fitr prayers in 2026.

Ibrahim Waiya, the commission for internal affairs, stated that the government is committed to preserving Kano's rich cultural heritage while ensuring the safety of residents and properties during the celebrations. The festival will include modified events such as the hawan sallah and hawan nasarawa, with security agencies directed to intensify surveillance.

Emir Sanusi II, dressed in royal regalia, participated in the celebrations, which featured thousands of attendees dressed in traditional attire. The festival, recognized by UNESCO, showcases Kano's cultural heritage and aims to promote tourism and boost the local economy.
