ASUSS Urges Kogi Government to Enhance School Security

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Kogi State chapter, expressed serious concerns regarding ongoing attacks on schools in the state, emphasizing that educational institutions should not be targets for criminal activities. In a communique issued by the Executive Council in Lokoja, the union called on the government and security agencies to bolster security around schools through proactive measures.

They commended Governor Usman Ododo for efforts to improve security and maintain a positive relationship with the workforce. The ASUSS urged the Kogi State Government to restore the 27.5 percent Teachers’ Special Allowance (TSA), which recognizes the unique demands of the teaching profession.

Additionally, they noted the introduction of the Kogi State Health Insurance Scheme but urged teachers to enroll. The council also raised concerns about the piecemeal payment of gratuities to retired workers and the acute shortage of teachers in public secondary schools, calling for urgent recruitment to fill vacancies.

Lastly, they proposed a motorcycle loan scheme for teachers in rural areas to enhance mobility.
