ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by President Christopher Piwuna, has issued a warning of a potential nationwide strike in public universities across Nigeria if the Federal Government and state governments do not address its outstanding demands. This statement was made following an emergency meeting of ASUU's National Executive Council (NEC) at the University of Abuja.

The union's grievances include the non-implementation of a December 2025 agreement, which was the result of over eight years of negotiations. ASUU specifically highlighted the failure to remit billions of naira deducted from lecturers' salaries as a significant issue.

Piwuna stated that unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to resolve these issues, ASUU-NEC will not accept blame for initiating a nationwide strike action without further notice. The union has called on both federal and state governments to take urgent measures to implement the December 2025 agreement and address other grievances.
