ASUU Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to 20 Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorized 20 universities to commence processes for industrial action over the Federal Government and state governments' failure to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. The affected branches have been directed to issue a 14-day ultimatum to their respective governments before going on strike.

This decision was made during ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna stated that an emergency NEC meeting would be convened at the end of August or early September to review developments.

The union criticized the “haphazard implementation” of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement and the lack of government action regarding necessary funding. The agreement, signed in December 2025, aimed to address issues related to lecturers’ welfare, remuneration, working conditions, and public university funding.

If demands are not met after the ultimatum, the affected branches will proceed with the strike.
