IMSU ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike Over Welfare Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University branch, initiated an indefinite strike on Monday, threatening ongoing student examinations. The strike was prompted by the alleged failure of the Imo state government and university management to implement a 2025 agreement signed on December 23, 2025, concerning improved welfare and conditions of service for academic staff.

The ASUU branch Chairman, Stephen Oguji, and Secretary, Lazarus Chikwendu, stated that despite repeated presentations to the university management and a 21-day ultimatum, no response was received. Additional grievances include the non-implementation of the agreement by Imo State University while other state universities have complied, retention of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) against their wishes, withheld promotion arrears dating back to 2016, and unpaid salaries for several months.

The ASUU leadership has declared that they will not return to classes until the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement is fully implemented at the university.
