Nigerian Government Begins Implementation of ASUU Agreements for Salary Increase and Allowance

The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, led by Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced the commencement of implementing agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The agreements include a 40% increase in consolidated academic allowances for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026. The Ministry, represented by Folashade Boriowo, has directed all federal universities to ensure uniform implementation nationwide.

The increase in salary payments has been captured in the 2026 budget, following formal statutory processes. The government emphasized the need for compliance and urged universities to utilize resources effectively for prompt payment.

This move is aimed at strengthening the academic environment, boosting staff morale, and enhancing teaching, research, and learning outcomes across Nigerian universities.
