ASUU Gives Nigerian Govt 4-Day Ultimatum on Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Nigerian government to begin implementing a newly approved salary structure for lecturers across the country. This announcement was made by ASUU President Christoph Piwuna during a public lecture at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State, on Thursday.

The countdown for the ultimatum commenced immediately, urging the government to start payments under the agreed salary framework without delay. Piwuna explained that the demand is part of ongoing efforts to improve lecturer welfare and tackle persistent issues such as poor pay, which contribute to brain drain and a gradual decline in the quality of higher education in Nigeria.

He lamented that despite multiple agreements reached with the government, execution remains inconsistent, often triggering disputes and industrial action. The union has a long history of embarking on nationwide strikes to push for its demands, which have repeatedly disrupted academic activities and impacted millions of students.
