ASUU Rejects FG-Coventry University Campus Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by President Christoph Piwuna, has publicly opposed the Nigerian government's agreement with Coventry University to establish a campus in Nigeria. During a lecture at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Piwuna described the proposal as unacceptable, alleging it is part of a broader agenda to undermine Nigeria's university system.

He expressed concerns regarding Nigerian students facing visa restrictions for studying in the UK and emphasized that foreign universities are experiencing financial challenges and declining international student enrollment. Piwuna insisted that Nigeria should strengthen its own universities rather than allow foreign institutions to dominate the sector.

Additionally, ASUU issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government to implement a new salary structure for university lecturers, warning that failure to meet this deadline would prompt further action. Fatima Tahir, Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, reaffirmed the institution's commitment to staff welfare and noted steps taken to implement agreements with the federal government.
