Halimatu Thrives in UNICEF-Supported Classroom in Jigawa

Halimatu Usman, a four-year-old student at Yakubu Pilot Primary School in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, is experiencing a positive educational environment thanks to UNICEF's early childhood care and development (ECCD) initiatives. In her colorful classroom, Halimatu engages in storytelling, singing, and hands-on learning activities, supported by two trained teachers.

This contrasts with the dire conditions at Masaya Primary School, where 185 pupils are taught by a single teacher, lacking basic learning materials and structured play areas. UNICEF's intervention has established ECCD classrooms, significantly improving early childhood education by increasing enrollment and providing essential teaching materials.

Nasiru Ibrahim, Halimatu's head teacher, noted the transformative impact of these initiatives on young learners. Despite the progress, millions of Nigerian children still lack access to pre-primary education, with UNICEF calling for increased investment in ECCD across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states to address the growing educational crisis.
