ATCON Advocates for Local Content in Telecom Growth

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has highlighted the critical need for local content development to foster sustainable growth within the telecommunications sector. This was discussed during ATCON's annual general meeting held in Lagos, where Mr.

Chidi Ibisi, CEO of Broadbased Communications Limited, emphasized that local content should be viewed as a tool for economic growth rather than mere protectionism. He noted that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the economy, accounting for 98% of businesses and contributing 50% to the GDP.

ATCON disclosed plans to take a leading role in shaping policies that direct the industry, including the establishment of a multi-stakeholder committee to develop a local content framework. ATCON President Toni Emoekper stated that the success of Nigeria's digital economy relies on empowering indigenous operators to extend broadband access beyond major cities.

Strengthening local ISPs will create opportunities that extend beyond mere internet access, positioning Nigeria for growth in fintech, software development, and emerging technologies.
