Atiku Abubakar Promises Fuel Subsidy Restoration in 2027

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has promised to restore the fuel subsidy if elected in the 2027 presidential election. He argues that the removal of the subsidy has led to significant economic pain for Nigerians, including increased petrol prices and higher transportation costs, which have exacerbated the cost of living.

Following the subsidy removal, Nigeria generated approximately ₦15.8 trillion in additional public resources from May 2023 to December 2025, with state governments receiving about ₦6.52 trillion, the federal government ₦5.43 trillion, and local governments ₦3.88 trillion. Despite this revenue, Atiku raised concerns about the effective utilization of these funds, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.

He questioned the lack of clear public reporting on how the additional revenue has been spent and vowed to hold accountable those responsible for mismanagement of funds from past fuel subsidy savings.
