Atiku Abubakar Demands Transparency on Nigeria-US Health Pact

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), called on the Federal Government to publish the full text of Nigeria’s health agreement with the United States. This request follows comments from Ghanaian President John Mahama, who revealed that Ghana rejected a proposed health compact due to concerns over medical records, pathogen information, funding obligations, and inspection of imported medicines.

Atiku highlighted that Nigerians are unaware of whether the provisions rejected by Ghana are included in the agreement signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on 19 December 2025. The agreement, a five-year Memorandum of Understanding, involves disease surveillance and health data systems, with the U.S. providing nearly $2 billion in grants.

Atiku questioned the government's ability to meet domestic health funding commitments, referencing the Minister of Health's disclosure that only N36 million had been released from a N218 billion budget for health projects in 2025. He urged for the publication of the complete Memorandum of Understanding and related protocols to ensure accountability.
