Atiku Demands FBI Disclose Records on Tinubu Investigation

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly challenged the Federal Bureau of Investigation's decision to withhold investigative records connected to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The FBI filed a motion in U.S. federal court seeking permission to submit confidential explanations for why certain documents remain undisclosed, citing potential dangers to individuals.

Atiku, who ran as the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, contends that such national security justifications should not serve as blanket cover for information that could legally be made available. The withheld records relate to allegations of drug trafficking involving the President, according to both reports.

The FBI's application to keep portions of its investigative file sealed was dated August 20. Atiku's position is that Nigerians have a right to access information about their leader and that the federal government's safety argument does not adequately address public interest in transparency.

Atiku connected his criticism to broader governance issues, linking the lack of transparency to economic difficulties facing ordinary Nigerians. He specifically referenced hardship resulting from the government's removal of fuel subsidies, arguing that accountability in leadership extends to both foreign investigations and domestic policy decisions.

The former Vice President indicated that if returned to office, he would reverse the subsidy removal policy. The FBI's motion seeks to explain its redactions privately to the court rather than in public filings.

This approach would allow the agency to present security concerns directly to judges without disclosing the reasoning in documents available to the public. The dispute remains pending in U.S. federal court, with no confirmed timeline for resolution or public disclosure of the contested records.
