Atiku Abubakar Warns of Kidney Sales Amid Economic Crisis

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed alarm over reports of young Nigerians selling their kidneys for as little as ₦1.7 million as a means of survival amid the economic crisis in Nigeria. In a post on 𝕏 on Thursday, Atiku attributed this disturbing trend to the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the rising cost of living has forced young people into desperate situations.

He highlighted that essential items such as food, transport, rent, school fees, medicine, and electricity have become increasingly unaffordable. Atiku remarked that the notion of young Nigerians viewing their kidneys as emergency savings reflects a severe economic crisis, not just ordinary hardship.

He acknowledged existing laws against commercial organ sales but emphasized that legislation alone cannot resolve the underlying poverty and desperation. Atiku called for economic reforms that prioritize affordable living conditions, including food, transportation, healthcare, and job creation, to restore hope for the younger generation.
