Coalition Needed to Challenge Tinubu in 2027 Elections

Okonkwo, the spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's presidential campaign, asserted that the opposition lacks a viable path to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections unless they form a united coalition. During an interview with Ibeju Upgrade Media, published on YouTube on July 24, 2026, Okonkwo specifically dismissed the electoral prospects of Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, stating that he could not challenge Tinubu, the President of the All Progressives Congress (APC), independently and expect to succeed.

Okonkwo also expressed skepticism regarding the impact of Obi's running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on the NDC's chances. Obi was ratified as the NDC's presidential candidate on May 29, 2026, after departing from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier that month.

The comments reflect the current fractured state of the opposition, which has struggled to unify since both Atiku and Obi emerged as candidates for different parties, thereby splitting the opposition vote ahead of the upcoming general elections.
