Atiku's Camp Says Opposition Must Unite to Beat Tinubu in 2027

Kenneth Okonkwo, a campaign spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has issued a stark warning to Nigeria's fractured opposition: unite behind a single candidate or risk handing President Bola Tinubu another term in 2027. Speaking in recent interviews, Okonkwo contended that no single opposition figure—including Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress—possesses the electoral strength to unseat the incumbent without a coordinated alliance.

Okonkwo specifically challenged Obi's viability as a standalone candidate, pointing to perceived weaknesses in the northern region where Tinubu secured significant support in 2023. He dismissed suggestions that Kano State's Rabiu Kwankwaso could meaningfully strengthen Obi's ticket, arguing that Kwankwaso has lost his political base in his home state.

According to Okonkwo, Obi's limited appeal north of the Niger makes him vulnerable to Tinubu in a head-to-head matchup. The spokesperson promoted Atiku as the opposition's chosen unifying figure, claiming that opposition parties had converged on the African Democratic Congress platform in July 2026 and selected Atiku as their consensus candidate.
