TRCN Launches ATPP to License 250,000 Unqualified Teachers

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has endorsed the Federal Government’s Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), aiming to train and license over 250,000 unqualified teachers in Nigeria. This initiative, led by Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, addresses the issue of teachers lacking recognized qualifications.

Under the ATPP, participants will complete a six-month program that includes a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for non-education graduates and a Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) for National Diploma holders. The program consists of four months of blended training followed by two months of supervised teaching practice.

Successful candidates will then take the TRCN Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) to obtain professional certification and licensing. The initiative is implemented by a Technical Working Group headed by Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad and involves various educational agencies, including the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
