Nigeria Launches Teacher Certification Program for Non-Degree Educators

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), a structured program aimed at helping practicing teachers who lack formal education qualifications to become fully certified and licensed while continuing to teach. This initiative is part of Pillar 6 of the Nigeria Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which focuses on Education Quality Assurance and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda for education.

The ATPP is designed for various categories of educators, including those with non-education university degrees, Higher National Diplomas (HND), National Diplomas (ND), Ordinary National Diplomas (OND), and non-professional teachers in different educational settings. The program allows participants to gain professional qualifications without stepping away from their teaching roles, addressing the issue of untrained teachers in Nigerian classrooms.

The government emphasizes that the quality of education is directly linked to the quality of its teachers.
