NTI to Lead Teacher Professionalisation Initiative in Nigeria

The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in Kaduna has been designated to coordinate the Nigerian Government’s Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP), a new initiative aimed at professionalising approximately 250,000 unqualified serving teachers. This initiative, initiated by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, is designed to address qualification gaps in the education sector without requiring teachers to leave their classrooms.

The NTI, under the leadership of its Director and Chief Executive, Professor Sadiya Sani Daura, will act as the Coordinating Secretariat, supervised by the Ministry of Education. The ATPP will be implemented in collaboration with various organizations, including the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

The program will utilize a blended learning model, incorporating self-paced digital content and supervised teaching practice. A national panel of about 40 content experts has developed the program modules, which are set to launch in October 2026, with a media strategy overseen by Dr Iyela Ajayi.
