Australia Raises Salary Requirement for Specialist Skills Visa

Australia has announced the updated Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) for foreign workers applying under the Specialist Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa for the 2026–2027 financial year. The Department of Home Affairs confirmed that nomination applications submitted between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 must meet a salary requirement of AUD146,576 (N135.39 million) per year.
This visa category, which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa, is designed to attract highly skilled overseas workers, particularly those in high-earning professions not listed on standard skilled occupation lists. Since its launch in December 2024, the income threshold has increased annually, starting from AUD135,000 for applications lodged between 7 December 2024 and 30 June 2025, and rising to AUD141,210 for the period from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026.
The current threshold represents the highest to date, reflecting Australia's strategy to index the salary requirement to economic conditions.
