Australia Reports First Suspected H5 Bird Flu Case

Australia has reported its first suspected case of the H5 bird flu strain, identified in a brown skua found at Cape Le Grand National Park in Western Australia. The state agriculture minister, Jacki Jarvi, announced that the bird tested positive for avian influenza, with further tests planned to confirm the strain.

This virulent H5 strain has been responsible for significant wildlife and poultry deaths since its spread began in 2021, affecting millions of birds and livestock. The country has not confirmed a mainland case of this deadly strain, which was previously identified in Heard Island, a sub-Antarctic Australian territory, in late 2025.

As a precaution, Australia is tightening biosecurity measures on farms and testing shorebirds for the disease. Environment Minister Murrai Watt stated that the results will determine if the deceased brown skua contracted the H5 bird flu.

Wildlife veterinarian Wayne Boardman from Adelaide University noted the potential devastating impact on Australia's native wildlife.
