ADF Lists Conditions for Non-Citizen Military Enlistment

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has outlined specific conditions under which non-Australian citizens may enlist in the military. For standard applicants, eligibility requires being a citizen of New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, or Papua New Guinea, or being a permanent resident living in Australia or holding a 444 subclass visa.

Applicants must have lived in Australia for at least one year prior to applying and must not have served in a foreign military in the two years preceding their application. In exceptional cases, the ADF may waive the citizenship requirement if a position cannot be filled by an Australian citizen.

The ADF also offers an Overseas Lateral Entry (OLE) pathway for current or recently separated foreign military members, requiring at least three years of military experience and other qualifications. Applicants must be under 55 years of age and demonstrate competent English ability.

Various entry options are available, including General Entry, Officer Entry, a Gap Year program, and part-time Reserves.
