British Army Recruitment Closed for Nigerians; US Army Requirements Explained

As of September 2026, the British Army has closed its recruitment window for Commonwealth residents, including Nigerians, except for musician applicants. The Army received a high volume of applications in 2024 and has not announced a reopening date for general recruitment.

Applicants must meet nationality, medical, fitness, and qualification requirements when recruitment is open. The application process includes submitting an application, attending an Army Briefing, and, if selected, participating in a two-day Assessment Centre in the UK.

The British Army covers travel expenses for applicants attending the Assessment Centre. In contrast, the US Army requires non-US citizens, including Nigerians, to have lawful permanent resident status in the United States before they can enlist.

A Nigerian living in Nigeria cannot apply directly at a US embassy to join the US Army.
