Stakeholders Urge Expansion of Lagos Airport Apron Space

Aviation stakeholders have called for the urgent expansion of the apron space at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, citing existing limitations that constrain aircraft movement and undermine the airport's potential as a regional hub. This demand was articulated in a public communiqué issued following a business breakfast meeting and aviation safety roundtable held on Thursday.

The communiqué, made available by ASRTI's Albinu Chiedu, highlights the necessity to create additional aircraft parking space, particularly for wide-body operations, due to current structural constraints. Stakeholders noted that without immediate intervention, congestion at the apron will continue to adversely affect turnaround times and overall operational efficiency.

They outlined several critical areas requiring urgent attention, including the provision of transit facilities to support hub operations and the modernization of cargo handling systems. Recommendations also included upgrading airfield lighting systems and implementing advanced navigational control systems to enhance safety and efficiency at the airport.
