Aviation Unions Back NAMA Commercialization in Nigeria

Aviation unions in Nigeria have expressed their support for the recommendation to commercialize and privatize the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). This recommendation was made by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and is seen as a necessary step to unlock access to private equity and financing through international bond capital markets.

The unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), argue that commercialization will enable NAMA to become a self-sustaining entity capable of accessing capital markets and attracting private investment for long-term projects. They criticized the current reliance on government budget allocations, which they claim limits funding and delays necessary safety upgrades and infrastructure modernization.

The unions insist that a shift towards commercialization is urgent to improve operational efficiency and safety in Nigeria's aviation sector.
