Awoniyi Sent Off in Coventry's Heavy 5-0 Loss to Brighton

Taiwo Awoniyi, a 29-year-old striker for Coventry City FC, received a red card in the 53rd minute during a Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion FC, which ended in a 5-0 defeat for Coventry. The incident occurred shortly after Brighton scored their second goal, with Awoniyi's flailing arm hitting Brighton's Maxim De Cuyper as he attempted to reach a long punt from the goalkeeper.

Referee Tony Harrington issued the red card without VAR intervention. This was Awoniyi's first sending-off in the English Premier League and the second in his overall club football career.

He became the 11th Nigerian player to be sent off in the EPL, the first since Semi Ajayi in 2023. Following Awoniyi's dismissal, Brighton scored three additional goals, with Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk, and Yasin Ayari contributing to the scoreline.

The defeat marked Coventry's fourth consecutive loss this season, making it the first time in the club's history they failed to score or earn points in their first four league matches.
