Badosa Defends Against Retirement Disrespect Claims

Paula Badosa, a former world number two, addressed claims of disrespecting the sport after her withdrawal from a match against Elina Svitolina at the Dubai Tennis Championship due to a right thigh issue. Badosa had previously defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 7-5 but retired while trailing 4-1 in the first set against Svitolina.

Following her withdrawal, a social media user accused her of disrespecting the game, stating that players cannot withdraw from tournaments. Badosa defended her decision, highlighting her chronic injuries and the daily struggles she faces, stating, "I give everything even when it’s so difficult." She is contemplating the end of her playing career in 2024 due to ongoing injuries, including chronic back problems.

Badosa, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January 2025, criticized the toxic nature of social media and the mental health issues athletes endure, referencing fellow player Destanee Aiava's recent announcement of her retirement at age 25.
