Falconets Coach Blames Key Player Absences for World Cup Exit

Mansur Abdullahi, the assistant coach of Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, stated that the team's performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Poland was significantly hindered by the absence of at least seven key players. The Falconets were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a narrow defeat to Colombia.

Abdullahi explained that the missing players compromised the team's depth and disrupted their tactical plans. The absences were primarily due to last-minute diplomatic visa issues and injuries sustained during training.

Team captain Joy Igbokwe, along with Sandra John and Faridat Abdulwahab, faced visa denials, while Chiamaka, Ifeanyi Kindness, Amblessed Ugwu, and Hanna Ibrahim were sidelined by injuries. Abdullahi expressed that had these players been present, the Falconets could have advanced further in the tournament.

He acknowledged the pride of Nigerians in the team's efforts despite the challenges faced and emphasized the invaluable experience gained by the participating players.
