Iraq Celebrates World Cup Qualification After Decades

On Wednesday, Baghdad erupted in joy as Iraq's national football team qualified for the World Cup for the first time in decades, following a 2-1 victory over Bolivia on Tuesday night. This qualification marks Iraq's first World Cup appearance since 1986.

The match's significance was heightened by the backdrop of ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, which have exacerbated tensions in Iraq. Despite the dire economic situation and the memories of violence, thousands of Iraqis celebrated in the streets, reminiscent of the national team's victory in the 2007 Asian Cup.

Players Ali Al Muhandi and Aymen Hussein scored the goals that secured the win. The Iraqi government congratulated the team and announced a bonus for the players, along with two days of holiday to celebrate the achievement.

Iraq will compete in the World Cup group against France, Senegal, and Norway.
