Legal Battle Over NURTW Leadership Intensifies in Abuja

A fresh legal battle has emerged in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) as Tajudeen Baruwa's faction attempts to reclaim the union's national headquarters in Abuja. This follows a recent police operation that led to Baruwa's arrest and the detention of several union members.

The conflict stems from a leadership crisis that began in 2023, resulting in parallel leadership structures within the union. In March 2024, the National Industrial Court declared Baruwa as the duly elected president of the union, a ruling later upheld by the Court of Appeal in November 2024.

Musiliu Akinsanya, known as MC Oluomo, disputes the legitimacy of Baruwa's faction, claiming that the judgment they rely on is under appeal. Suleiman Abdulkadir Musa, the union's general secretary, defends Baruwa's actions, asserting they are based on valid court judgments.

The situation reflects ongoing tensions and differing interpretations of recent court rulings regarding the union's leadership.
