Baze University Celebrates 20 Years of African Court

On April 9, 2026, Baze University, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, hosted a public lecture to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (AfCHPR), an organ of the African Union. The event, held at the Faculty of Law, brought together academics, legal practitioners, students, and human rights advocates to reflect on the court's contributions to promoting and protecting human rights across Africa over the past two decades.

Hon. Ladi Justice Stella Isibhakhomen Anukam, a judge of the AfCHPR, delivered the keynote lecture titled "Moving from Promises to Action: 20 Years of Protecting Human Rights," examining the court's mandate, landmark achievements, and its evolving role in strengthening accountability and safeguarding fundamental freedoms.

Anukam emphasized the importance of translating legal commitments into tangible outcomes for citizens and highlighted the court's critical role in interpreting and enforcing human rights standards among African Union member states. The lecture provided a platform for robust engagement and discussion on human rights challenges and the court's impact over the last two decades.
