BCPG Warns of Impending School Building Collapse in Yaba, Lagos State

The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) has issued a warning about the possible collapse of a three-story classroom block at Mainland Senior High School in Yaba, Lagos State. In a letter dated January 30, 2026, addressed to the Lagos State Commission of Education, BCPG highlighted the distress identified in the building since April 2019.

Despite previous incidents like the Ita Faaji building collapse in March 2019, where 20 pupils died, no remedial action has been taken on the Yaba school building. BCPG conducted a joint inspection with LASBCA officials and traditional rulers, revealing alarming defects like a deteriorating roof and corroded reinforcement bars.

Urgent measures, including isolating the building and potential demolition, were recommended to avert a disaster. The Guild emphasized the need for safety protocols within school premises and criticized regulatory delays.

BCPG's appeal for prompt action underscores the risk of further delays leading to a potential catastrophe.
